Men's Team Event Final - Malta vs Luxembourg
Result: 3-2
Simon Gerada and Andrzej Makowski beat Luxembourg's Fabien Simon, Mike Bast and Airlindo
De Sousa in the Mens Table Tennis Final this afternoon in the Encamp sports complex.
Lasting almost two and a half hours, and with nail-biting situations, this was a well
deserved win to the Maltese team.
The first game match went to Simon with a score of 3-1 (7-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-8) against
Simon Fabien. A very decisive win.
Second was Andrzej who doubled Malta's advantage with a 3-1 (11-6, 5-11, 11-5, 11-8) win
over Airlindo De Sousa. Malta were now leading by 2-0 and only needed a win in the doubles
event to clench the gold medal.
However, the Luxembourg duo Simon and Bast fought hard to win the doubles game 3-1 (11-8,
10-12, 9-11, 11-5). In the next game, Airlindo De Sousa grabbed the fourth match from
Simon 3-2 (14-16, 12-14, 11-6, 11-2, 11-6) who although leading after the first 2 sets
seemed to lose his rythmn.
It was all in the hands of Andrzej who played the final decisive game winning 3-0 against
SImon to seal Malta's success and secure the gold medal.
Final Standings:
GOLD - Malta
SILVER - Luxembourg
BRONZE - Iceland
